News and Updates
You might have started to see some ads for the Wildest Event on Haida Gwaii in Northword Magazine and the Haida Gwaii Trader.
We are working on making this edition of the Wild Harvest Festival as memorable as the past ones.
Let's start with some less uplifting news. Sadly, Chefs Edi Szasz and John Lowe will not be able to come this year for the Festival and bring us their dinner creations.
However, another executive chef and wild foods specialist has recently been contacted and we will announce the details of a dinner once it is for sure happening. The dinner would happen at the Sandspit Inn, will be by pre-booking only, like previous years, and will be on the Saturday night September 8th. Likely 2 sittings as well. Details, once again, will be communicated at a later date.
There will also be "wild foods" at the Festival during the entire event and the community hall kitchen will be manned by our local Sandspit Chef Rachel from the "I Love Local" Mobile Eatery.
The event will have a special occasions license and we will bring you a brand new selection of "Wild Cocktails" (that we are testing at the moment just for you).
The event will stretch into the evening on Friday as the doors of the Community Hall will remain open to welcome Laura Sample, who will show us her latest slideshow at 5pm.
At 7:30pm, we will have live music for the first time at the Festival, with a 4-piece band from Prince George called Saltwater Hank. There will be no cover charge but the band will "pass the hat" during the performance.
A new addition too is a "Wild Run and Walk".
At 8:30am on Saturday, all are invited to meet in front of the Sandspit Community Hall for a "run around the Spit" led by 2018 Totem-to-Totem Half Marathon winner Melissa Paugh (The run should last about 50mn and is about 6-7km). Meet same time same place for a walk to the Spit of about 3km return - 45mn.
Stu Crawford will be back this year with some great ideas. He suggested a pitcooking demonstration and we plan to share the results of a day-long roast in a firepit to the visitors on the saturday evening. He also will likely be doing a presentation on the mushrooms of Haida Gwaii!
Susan Musgrave will be back also this year and will be sharing stories from her now legendary book "A Taste of Haida Gwaii".
Coming from the Seattle area, Jairul Ramahan, a mushroom and wild edible expert (among other things), is also expected to come up and share her knowledge of all things wild with us!
I do have to stop somewhere with all these updates and more news will be shared in the next few weeks. Please keep checking out our website and our schedule page for details and updates as we move closer to the date of this Wild Event.
We hope to see everyone in September for the 4th Annual Sandspit Wild Harvest Festival!
